Every good tequila story starts out with having had a few shots too many and trails off with not remembering how the night actually ended. The customary way of shooting a shot of tequila is to lick some salt off your hand, down the tequila, and then suck on a slice of lime.
But let’s back up and learn a bit about the history of tequila before we drink. Tequila comes from the fermented juices obtained from the hearts of blue agave plants grown in the Tequila Region of Mexico. Tequila gets its name from the town of Tequila located in the state of Jalisco where production started more than 200 years ago. It is also one of the only liquors that are distilled two times.
Most of us when we think back to our experience with tequila we think of the stuff like Cuervo or tequila bang bang used in cheap margaritas or as shooters. In those days it was definitely "one tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor”, but with more of these big box liquor stores opening you are able to get a lot of different tequilas out there. Now let’s get to drinking!
#10. Sauza Gold Tequila is an upgrade from your regular tequila (Cuervo Gold). This is great tequila if you’re on a budget. It is not as harsh as the others in its price range.
#9. Milagro Reposado Tequila tastes great! I first had this one night at a friend’s house and we all wound up killing the bottle between the four of us or was it six, I can’t remember. It tasted better than the blanco version from the same company, I think!
#8. El Tesoro de Don Felipe Platinum Tequila is a smooth criminal. When I first had this it was the reposado version. It was one of the smoothest tequilas I have ever had. It went down like water. The group I was with killed this bottle in one sitting as well. The Platinum was also smooth and enjoyed by all.
#7. Cazadores Tequila Reposado is a favorite at my family barbeques. It goes down well. So grab the lime, some salt, a carne asada taco and you’re set.
#6. Cabo Wabo was introduced to me at Sammy Hagar’s Cabo Wabo Cantina in Cabo San Lucas. I really like the Anejo and the Uno Anejo Reserva. All Cabo Wabo tequilas go great with Sammy’s great hits and some chips, salsa and fish tacos.
#5. Patron Silver is great when served cold. This is one bottle you want to put in the freezer. This is a very popular choice in many restaurants and bars. It is real smooth with no harsh flavor on the way down. Be careful you may want to keep drinking it till the cows come home.
#4. Herradura Seleccion Suprema Anejo is more on the high-end side for tequila, but as with finer things it is worth every bit. Tastes good on the way down, so smooth you will want another.
#3. Tequila AsomBroso ExtraAnejo makes for a very good shot and tasted like something different than your ordinary shot of tequila. This seemed to be a popular choice at the bar among the ladies or maybe it was just the bottle it came in.
#2. Don Julio 1942 Anejo I first was introduced to this tequila when a good friend gave me a bottle as a gift. I waited till the following New Year’s Eve to open it because it looked like it warranted a special occasion. It definitely was worth the wait. It is probably the best I have ever had and recommend this to anyone who partakes in drinking tequila. You don’t need the lime or salt for this. Just drink it straight.
#1. Don Julio Real is costly but is the crème brulee or better yet as my friend would say “this is the shit”. He brought this out at his birthday party after he saw the face I made when I joined his son for a shot of the tequila they had to make margaritas. It is expensive but worth every penny. Words cannot explain the beauty of this tequila. It is my choice for a special occasion, like your wedding.
So now that you have a bit more knowledge about the different types of tequila out there let’s hope for more refined experiences. Just remember its popularity and flexibility make it easy for the drinks to sneak up on you so be careful if you partake in the tequila experience!
