Once you step off the plane your senses will go into overdrive with the smell of flowers being carried by the light ocean breeze. Immediately you will feel the warmth of the people also known as the “Aloha Spirit”. You quickly realize this is not a dream you just landed in paradise. There is no place like this on earth and it’s the place you can get laid before even leaving the airport. Yep, I am talking about Hawaii.
Hawaii is the youngest U.S. state, but is rich with history and culture. It is home to one of the world’s most active volcanoes and is the place where surfing and the hula came to life. Whether your honeymoon is your first trip or you are returning there are six different islands, which offer multiple options to experience: Maui, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai and Hawaii’s Big island. Each one of these islands is unique in landscape and climate, but none of them fall short of fun activities, adventures and jaw-dropping scenery.
Maui is the second largest, most popular island and is known for some of the best beaches in the world. While here dress warm and catch a sunrise at Haleakala National Park or visit the crater of Haleakala and sneak a peak at some sea turtles while snorkeling. Rent a jeep or convertible and take the long, winding, scenic road to Hana. Make sure you pack lunch, a blanket and stop often to enjoy the many hidden romantic treasures along the way.
Be sure to hit one of Hawaii’s best restaurants, Mama’s Fish House. Located near Paia, this Maui fish house serves some of the best seafood on the island, all prepared in Hawaiian and Polynesian styles. This place is secluded in a private cove, surrounded by beaches and the sound of coconut palms swaying in the breeze. You and the Mrs. will for sure dine in true island fashion.
For a night on the town be sure to visit the town of Lahaina. While strolling along, hand in hand, be sure to check out the Hula Grill. Set on the beach, this hopping Maui bar has great ocean views and a very fun, festive environment. Hula Grill is a restaurant decorated with hula figurines, koa-wood canoes, etc. They are known for preparing fresh fish a number of different ways and their crab cakes and ribs are equally good. Also at their "Barefoot Bar," catch a nightly hula show.
Kauai is the oldest and northernmost island and is one of stunning, natural beauty. This is a great stop for both the adventurous and romantics at heart. Here you can explore the golden sand beaches and visit the massive Waimea Canyon. Also you can take a boat ride to see the towering cliffs of the Napali Coast and if you have time you might want to go off the beaten path for a hike along the coast for breathtaking views. In the evening be sure to check out Keoki’s Paradise bar. This place is lit by tiki torches and surrounded by streams and tropical vegetation, making this a popular spot to visitors. The ambience complements the menu, which includes fresh fish and steaks. Plus, Keoki's Paradise bar is a fun hangout for those who want to drink and socialize. Usually Thursday to Sunday evenings, you can catch live bands playing Hawaiian music. Oahu is the state capitol and is where most of Hawaii's population lives; Oahu’s natural and cultural wonders mixed with the modern arts and entertainment make this island truly unique. Here you can catch pro surfers hit the big waves at North Shore. Also visit the memorials and museums in Pearl Harbor.
The fun heats up when the sun goes down in Oahu. Two favorite nightspots for locals as well as visitors in Downtown Honolulu are Restaurant Row and the Aloha Tower Marketplace. Restaurant Row is a complex of restaurants where you can find all kinds of cuisines. Every evening, Kuhio Beach, comes alive with authentic Hawaiian hula dancing and a torch-lighting ceremony. Molokai is an island that hasn’t lost its connection to the past and its love for the outdoors. Take a swim in the peaceful waters of Kaupoa beach or go for a leisurely stroll in the sleepy town of Kaunakakai. Also for something fun and different take a mule ride down to the Kalaupapa Peninsula.
Not known for a lively nightlife you may want to take advantage and enjoy a quiet evening with your new bride behind closed doors with some room service.
Lanai is a true island getaway for luxury, romance, and a place to escape the large crowds. This island doesn’t even have a traffic light. This is a great place to sneak away and get a game of golf in at one of its two prestigious courses. Or check out the rock formations at Keahiakawelo known as “The Garden of the Gods.”
In Lanai the night offers music and entertainment at its two resorts. For a finer dining experience you may want to try the Dining Room at the Lodge at Koele or the Ihilani and Hulopoe Court at the Manele Bay Resort. Other dining options include Pele's Other Garden, Canoes Lanai and the Blue Ginger Café - a local favorite. The island of Hawaii, or Hawaii's Big Island, is the biggest of all the islands and the most diverse in terrain. You go from sandy beaches to snowcapped mountains, yes snow. Here you will have an endless amount of activities to keep you both busy. In Hilo, waterfalls, rainforest and botanical gardens will surround you. Off the Kona Coast you can get in some get snorkeling, scuba diving or even some fishing. The Big Island is not known for its nightlife. Actually here the locals are asleep early to rise early. However you can find some places to go dancing in Hilo and some fun clubs on the Kona/Kohala coast. Here you may want to try a romantic sunset dinner cruise along the coast or attend a luau at one of the Kona/Kohala resorts.
