Shape Up, Or You May Be Shipping Out
So you’ve finally landed yourself a bride and now you think you can let yourself go? Think again.
You know you would have to do some serious training for a marathon. So think of you’re wedding day as the ultimate event marathon. Now, we know your new wife is not going to let you run 25 miles after the ceremony, nor would you want to. But it wouldn’t hurt to be in tip-top shape because it’s going to take a lot of endurance, patience and intestinal fortitude to get through your wedding day, especially if you’re still a bit sluggish from the bachelor party.
So, if you want to lose the paunch and look good for your honeymoon on that Hawaiian beach, here’s a few tips to shape up.
Put your fat to the fire: The biggest excuse for not exercising is “I don’t have the time.” Well, you can’t whine about that anymore. With just 10 minutes, you can take some simple steps to get the heart pumping. Don’t spend 20 minutes looking for a close parking spot at work, take the furthest one away and walk briskly … before you’re late and the boss fires you. Skip the elevator and use the stairs, unless you’re on the 80th floor. And above all, have more sex. Twenty minutes of sex for a 200-pound man can burn about 150 calories. And it’s a lot more fun than pillates. If you and your fiancee have decided not to engage in that sort of pre-marital activity, than by all means, sex with someone else won’t fly as part of your exercise regimen.
Cut back on the weights: If you’re trying to drop pounds, cut back on the weights. One set of high-intensity training is just as effective as three sets, says a study out of the University of Florida’s Center for Exercise Science. Spend that extra time on the treadmill, exercise bike or ab machine. The minimum strength workout can be done in just two, 20-minute sessions per week.
Film psychology 101: There’s nothing better for a diet than being scared straight, so watch the movie Super Size Me, which is out on DVD. With a sarcastic edge, filmmaker Morgan Spurlock interviews experts throughout the U.S., chronicling the legal, financial and physical costs of America’s ever-expanding waistline.
Get some zzzzzzzsssss: Time magazine’s December issue devoted its cover story to the science of sleep and the negative impact imposed by not getting enough shut-eye. Those who sleep fewer than six hours a night don’t live as long, and The National Commission on Sleep Disorders estimates that sleep deprivation costs $150 billion a year on workplace productivity and higher stress. And stress is something you might have to contend with already on your wedding day.
