It’s Not How You Feel, It’s How You Look

When it comes to wedding fashion, there’s no way the groom is going to outshine the bride; nor should he. But that’s no reason not to set you apart and look sharp.

The first thing in determining what to wear depends on the wedding’s level of formality. If it’s an evening wedding, a tuxedo is required. For morning or afternoon weddings, the option of wearing a suit is available, yet the attire depends solely on the bride and groom’s desire. Once the theme of the wedding is set, then you can plan your wardrobe.

The typical wedding is a formal evening affair, so the groom should be thinking black tie. It’s hard to go wrong with a classic black tuxedo with a white or spread-collar shirt, black tie and a coordinating vest or cummerbund. If it’s a daytime formal, think about tailcoats or a gray stroller. If you’re planning a June wedding where heat might be an issue, consider a white dinner jacket with a formal pair of pants to stay cool. Whatever the choice for a formal wedding, make sure you coordinate with the bride and bridesmaids when it comes to colors, styles and even the simple touches of corsages and boutonnieres.

If you want to set yourself apart with a jacket that is different from that of your groomsmen, sport a double-breasted and have the groomsmen wear single. Other ideas to distinguish yourself include a different color tie, satin over plain lapels or a fancier flower. All will help the groom stand out and make a splash.

If mainstream isn’t really your thing, go hipster-cool with a crushed velvet jacket or a colored and patterned vest. Blue blazers and khakis are also becoming popular, especially at semi-formal, daytime weddings.
